According to the LinkedIn profile of Glauco Longhi, Character Supervisor at Santa Monica Studio, the studio’s next game is a brand new IP. Longhi previously joined Sony Santa Monica to work on God of War (2018), and then proceeded to work on GOW Ragnarok. He then moved over to Striking Distance Studios to work on its new IP, The Callisto Protocol.

The Character Supervisor is once again working with the God of War developer. In his resume, he mentions that Santa Monica Studio presented him the opportunity of coming back as Character Supervisor, looking after the entire Character Development pipeline, on its new IP. He said that he is thrilled to be back, working alongside the crew once again and pushing characters in games together.

Santa Monica Studio’s new IP is likely the project that Cory Barlog has been working on. Meanwhile, it appears that a new God of War title is also in development in parallel at the studio, possibly directed by God of War Ragnarok director Eric Williams. According to an earlier job listing for the position of Combat Designer, developer Santa Monica Studio was looking to recruit someone with knowledge of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok (2022) combat systems, mechanics and enemies for the development of an unannounced title.

The bit that associates the listing to a potential new entry in the God of War series is one of the listed requirements for this position, which states that the fresh recruit must have knowledge of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok (2022), and be able to speak in depth about the combat systems, mechanics, and enemies in said games.

God of War Ragnarok is one of the fastest selling first-party games from Sony. It was released for the PS4 and PS5 this November and debuted with more than five million copies sold in its launch week, which is a record in itself. A sequel seems inevitable at this point.

The game is set in ancient Scandinavia, featuring Kratos and his adolescent son Atreus as the protagonists, and is loosely based on Norse mythology. Speaking during an interview, Amazon Studios’ Head of Television Vernon Sanders assured fans that the God of War TV show will stay true to the 2018 game. In response to a question regarding what he was most excited to show fans next, Sanders brought up the God of War TV show as having the potential to deliver a real emotional core, a real narrative story, which, according to him, is part of what makes the adaptation special. He highlighted how successful Amazon Studios have been with prior adaptations, from Invincible to The Boys.

In reference to his statement regarding the God of War TV series having an emotional core, Sanders highlighted the father-son dynamic from the game, and this is what the story will focus on in the first season. He said that this story of fathers and sons, and families, set against this giant epic landscape, is at the center of it all. He added that what showrunner Rafe Judkins and writers Mark Fergus and Hawk have come up with for the first season, and for the series, is both incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own. He claimed that those who have never played the game will fall in love with the show and feel very much invited in. Sanders is compelled to believe that the TV series is going to be a major success for Amazon Studios.

Meanwhile, the sequel to 2018’s God of War, God of War Ragnarok, was the most nominated game at The Game Awards 2022. Despite not coming out on top as the best game of 2022 at the show, it managed to snag a bunch of awards, including best narrative and best action adventure game.

The game had a record opening on Steam making it one of the biggest launches for Sony on PC. The previous record-holder was Horizon Zero Dawn at 56K concurrent players during its launch while God of War has managed to beat it easily with a player count of 73K. This is despite a pirated version already available online.

Another important metric to remember here is the overwhelmingly positive reception that the game has received from the players. In terms of Steam reviews, the game has a great ratio of positive reviews, nearly 97%, which is unheard of for such a blockbuster game. It also stands tall above other PlayStation PC ports.

Taking a look at the other games that have been published by Sony on Steam, Days Gone stands at 93% positive reviews while Horizon Zero Dawn is at 84%. It was also the first PC port for a major first-party game from Sony so it stands to reason that they are gradually improving their output on PC with each game.

All eyes are on the next major PC release, Uncharted: The Legacy of Thieves Collection. Not only will it mark the first time a Naughty Dog game has been released on PC, but it will also debut the Uncharted series to an entirely new audience on PC. It will bring the impressive Naughty Dog in-house engine to PC users just like Sony Santa Monica accomplished it with God of War, so there is a lot of eyes on this project.

Sony hasn’t announced the release date for Uncharted: The Legacy of Thieves Collection on PC, while there are no further games confirmed, for now, there have been rumors suggesting other games coming to Steam as well. This includes the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

While the game doesn’t offer any DRM protection for the day one launch, it is still creating a new record for Sony in terms of concurrent users at launch. It has surpassed the record set by Horizon Zero Dawn which had a peak concurrent user count of 56K compared to the 65K for God of War.

It is also one of the most pirated games on torrent trackers including both public and private trackers. If we take a look at the google trends, the pirated copy which has been published online by the piracy group FLT ranks in the top-ranked searches on Google Trends for God of War.

It is hard to estimate how many pirated copies are being downloaded, but just taking a look at one of the most popular trackers, we can see that more than 20K people are attempting to download the game.

One of the things that might have led to its high player count on Steam is the regional pricing, where it is the cheapest in Turkey at $24.32 based on the SteamDB tracker. The game has launched at a standard price of $49.99 on Steam and comes packed with an assortment of features that are exclusive to the PC version.

In a comparison between the PC and PS5(PS4 BC) versions, we can see that the PC version offers a decent upgrade overall with support for DLSS and AMD FSR helping it run on low-spec hardware and scales up well to the top of the line GPUs.
